Everyone’s got an opinion on FIFA this week. I’ve got 5 ingredients and 3 minutes 🏃‍♀️

This chocolate milk is the one my kids (and husband) ask for on repeat, and it needs zero processed sugar, no preservatives, no artificial flavors. And yet it’s the best tasting chocolate milk I’ve ever had (sorry Ovaltine🫣)

**What you need:**
- 3 cups milk
- 3 Tbsp cocoa powder
- 3 Tbsp maple syrup
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt

Whisk it all together and that’s it. Seriously, 3 minutes. You can adjust this recipe to however many cups you’re making.

For every 1 cup of milk, use:
1 Tbsp maple syrup
1 Tbsp of cocoa powder
1/2 tsp of vanilla extract
Pinch of salt

Pro tip: a creamier milk makes a difference here. Raw whole milk or organic half and half are my favorites, but honestly any milk works, even nut milks.

We are a generation completely disconnected from our food. Our plans to bridge that gap didn’t go as planned 😱

My coping mechanism is laughing it off. 🫣

Maybe our ancestors didn’t consume and waste as much food as we do now because they were so in tune and connected to the origins of their food.

@mina.attallah and I will probably go back to that farm because we love to challenge our perceptions of food. But for now, the kids are a no-go.

We took them to a nearby dog rescue after where they played with lots of dogs and that was therapeutic.

Don’t worry we had lots of chats with the kids listening to them and discussing. They are all good thank God!

Overwhelmed about where to even start eating healthier? I felt the same way 7 years ago, staring at my pantry like I needed a chemistry degree just to make dinner lol.

Here’s what I wish someone told me: you don’t have to overhaul everything today. Just stop buying anything with artificial food dyes (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1) and artificial flavors. Finish what you already have, just don’t bring in anything new with those two.

Dyes are just there for shelf appeal, not flavor or nutrition, and some have been linked to hyperactivity in kids. Artificial flavors can be a mystery blend of dozens of chemicals, companies don’t have to say what’s actually in them.

Awareness is step one. You don’t have to do this perfectly, you just have to start.

Everyone warns you about the socialization and choosing curriculum. Those end up being the best parts of homeschooling. The part nobody warns you about is lunch.

Here’s the thing: when you pack a lunchbox, they don’t get a say. They eat what you packed or they don’t. But at home, they’re right there while you’re making it, and someone always doesn’t like it.

Before homeschooling, I really only had to think about dinner. Now it’s breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner, times however many kids, and somehow you end up making three different things for three different people all day long.

As we start our 6th year of homeschooling, it’s quietly turned into a whole healthier lifestyle, and next thing I know, I’m making everything from scratch. Lol.

Here’s how I solved it:

I started bringing my kids into the kitchen and teaching them the skills they need. Now when someone doesn’t like what’s made, they can make something for themselves. And yes, that includes cleaning up after themselves too.

The hard part of involving them when they’re little is exactly what makes it easier when they’re older.

If you love a good fried rice, this one is about to be on repeat in your house.

My kids always volunteer to help chop the veggies for this, and somehow half of them disappear before they ever make it into the pan. True story. It is messy and slower with little hands involved, but those are the moments I am after.

This crunchy veggie fried rice is soy free. Instead of soy sauce and all its preservatives, I use coconut aminos for that same umami punch with clean, organic ingredients. The little hand chopper makes prep so easy, and you can use whatever veggies you have on hand. Want to make it a full meal? Add chicken, beef, or shrimp.

Frozen blueberries for the win 🙌

I don’t always have time to make frozen popsicles at home either.

My mom used to make us pesto salmon growing up and it became my favorite way to eat it.

Little did she know that by making her pesto from scratch, she was avoiding the seed oils hiding in most store bought jars. Now it’s a staple in my own home, and every time I make it I think of standing next to her, peeling the garlic and pushing the button on the food processor. (Thanks mom🥰)

Five real ingredients. No seed oil, no preservatives, no shortcuts. Just blend, taste, adjust, and use it over pasta or my favorite way, spread it over salmon and baked until tender.

It wasn’t always pretty.

There were years of flour everywhere, broken eggs in the batter, everything taking 3x as long to make because there were so many little hands still developing their fine motor skills. Some days it would’ve been so much easier to just say not right now.

Don’t get me started on dishes. Every time they “washed” the dishes it added a bigger cleanup for me later.

But at some point the table turned and now their help in the kitchen saves me time (they now all know how to wash the dishes so well it makes my life easier). This is the whole point of what we’re building here. Cooking isn’t just a recipe, it’s a sixth sense you build over time, together.

The hard stage is sooo temporary. I find myself missing those moments. The skills they learn are forever though.

The stevia plant surprised me in so many ways including how easy it is to take care of. It does very well in pots and is easy to propagate.

It is easier to say no.

No to the mess. No to the slow. No to the chaos that comes with letting them in.

But I keep coming back to this: what does my future adult child need me to say yes to today?

Because a yes to them is a no to me. My phone down. Their story heard. That’s where real growth happens.

And it goes further than that. What I do in this kitchen today shapes my kids. And their kids. And their kids after that. That’s what a generational kitchen means.

The kid who stirs the batter becomes the adult who knows the difference between food that nourishes and food that just fills a bag.

The kid who was bored becomes the adult who knows how to create.

The kid who was let in becomes the parent who lets their kids in too.

Convenience parenting is real. I feel that pull every day. But I want to parent with the end in mind.

Yes, I did have to clean up 6 cups of water off the floor.

Messes are inevitable, but it’s your attitude afterward that makes all the difference. I chose to laugh it off, and the kids laughed right along with me as we grabbed two large beach towels to soak up every last drop.

Laughing it off really is the best medicine.

And honestly? That memory is worth more than any store-bought carton of almond milk ever could be. No gums, no fillers, no seed oils. Just almonds, water, and a kitchen full of little helpers who now know exactly how almond milk is made.

Made Them From Scratch. Didn’t Get a Single One. 😆

Cheez-Its were my favorite snack growing up. I could finish a whole box without thinking twice.
